The Best Medicine: Foods That Heal, Part 2

Vegetables and Seaweeds
A Free Five-Part Discussion Series
Thursday, April 10, 5:30-7 PM
Greenstar Co-op, Ithaca NY
A healthy diet is invaluable for the vitality of all bodily systems. Healing that results from proper eating is not coincidental. Similar to herbal medicine, food has specific therapeutic properties. If diet is used correctly for prevention and treatment, other medicines are required much less frequently — if at all.

In this five-part series, Amanda Lewis, licensed acupuncturist and herbalist, will discuss the health benefits of five major food groups, drawing on insights from traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurvedic medicine, as well as current Western knowledge.

This second class will focus on the nutritional and medicinal uses of vegetables and seaweeds. Amanda will pass around visual samples of the less common foods for identification. All classes are free and open to the public and will be held in the Classrooms@GreenStar (former Enterprise Building), 700 W. Buffalo Street. Registration is required - sign up at GreenStar's Customer Service Desk or call 273-9392.

How We Get Sick: The Causes of Illness According to Traditional Chinese Medicine

-->
Thursday December 5, 2013
Greenstar Co-op, Ithaca NY
5-6:30pm

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) emphasizes balance as the key to good health. For example, it’s important to have balance between rest and activity, a balanced diet, and balance in temperature. Extremes in any aspect of life can become a cause of disease over time. Balance is relative to the individual; what is too much for one person may not be enough for another.

To determine a treatment plan in TCM, we look for what are called “Patterns of Disharmony.” To restore harmony, it’s essential to understand the primary cause of the imbalance.

In this class, Amanda Lewis, L.Ac, will cover the 3 primary causes of illness:

1.     Internal Causes (Emotions)
2.     External Causes (Climate factors)
3.     Other Causes (Diet, sleep, trauma, etc)

At the end of the class, Amanda will lead a tour through Greenstar, highlighting the various foods and supplements mentioned in the class.

Entering the Heart of the Patient: Pulse, Tongue, and Face Diagnosis

Greenstar, Ithaca NY
April 24, 2013, 5:30-7pm

In this class, licensed acupuncturist Amanda Lewis will discuss the basic theory and techniques of clinical examination used in both Traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. In both of these ancient, time-tested healing traditions, (1) pulse diagnosis as well as (2) tongue and (3) face examination are the primary methods used to assess a patient’s current state of health. The pulse, tongue, and face communicate vital information about the organs, channels, and health of the entire body and mind. This class will cover the essential points of these techniques, which you can use to improve your own health.

Amanda Lewis, a licensed acupuncturist and certified Chinese herbal medicine practitioner, currently sees patients in Ithaca, Binghamton, and Bainbridge, NY.
